Acne face washes are OTC drug products. The best way to compare them? Check what the FDA requires: active ingredient and concentration on the drug-facts label. We checked eight washes for acne-prone skin. They’re from PanOxyl, CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, Cetaphil, and Neutrogena. All use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. We compared label claims and prices, nothing else.
Quick verdict: PanOxyl’s 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Foaming Wash wins overall. Maximum OTC strength, works on face and body, costs around $10. CeraVe’s Acne Control Cleanser leads for salicylic acid. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated earns the upgrade slot. Neutrogena’s classic Oil-Free Acne Wash takes budget at around $9.

How We Evaluate
We checked every product against its live Amazon listing at publish time. Price, stock status, seller. All eight ship direct from Amazon. Since these are OTC drugs, we describe only what the drug-facts labels say and what brands claim. We haven’t tested those claims independently. We make zero treatment promises. “Formulated for” comes from the label, not us.
Benzoyl Peroxide vs Salicylic Acid: What the Labels Mean
The two OTC acne actives on these labels work differently. Benzoyl peroxide (2.5%–10% in washes) is labeled as an antimicrobial targeting acne bacteria. It also bleaches towels, pillowcases, and clothes. Rinse well. Salicylic acid (0.5%–2%) is a beta hydroxy acid labeled for clearing and unclogging pores.
Two cautions apply to both. Standard label language says: patch-test any new acne wash on a small spot first. Stop if irritation shows up. Also, exfoliating actives like salicylic acid can bump up sun sensitivity. Daily sunscreen is standard for any acne routine. Start low if your skin’s dry or sensitive. Introduce one new active at a time.
1. PanOxyl 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Foaming Wash - Best Overall

PanOxyl 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Foaming Wash
PanOxyl’s foaming wash hits maximum OTC benzoyl peroxide. 10% per the drug-facts label. The brand calls it the number-one-selling acne wash in the U.S. The label covers face, chest, and back. One around-$10 tube handles full-body use. This is the strongest OTC tier. The label’s own directions say start once daily. New to the active? Patch-test first or try the 4% creamy version below.
2. CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser - Best Salicylic Acid

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser (2% Salicylic Acid)
CeraVe’s Acne Control Cleanser combines 2% salicylic acid (max OTC wash strength) with the brand’s three ceramides and oil-absorbing hectorite clay. The gel comes out clear. Foams when you lather. Fragrance-free. The label says it’s formulated to clear acne and block new breakouts. Like any salicylic product, pair it with daily SPF.
3. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Acne Face Wash - Worth the Upgrade

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Acne Face Wash
Priciest wash here. Also the most extensively labeled for testing. Effaclar Medicated lists 2% salicylic acid plus lipo-hydroxy acid. The brand says it’s been allergy tested, dermatologist tested, sensitive-skin tested, and clinically tested for surface-oil reduction. Those are brand claims we haven’t measured ourselves. Want a French-pharmacy formula built on the same 2% salicylic active as drugstore picks? This is your upgrade.
4. CeraVe Foaming Acne Cream Cleanser - Best Cream-to-Foam

CeraVe Foaming Acne Cream Cleanser (4% Benzoyl Peroxide)
CeraVe’s benzoyl peroxide pick splits the difference. 4% strength per label. Cream-to-foam texture formulated with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides. On paper it’s the benzoyl peroxide choice for folks who find clear gels too stripping. Costs most per ounce among benzoyl options. Standard cautions still apply. Patch-test. Keep it away from colored towels.
5. Cetaphil Gentle Clear Acne Foaming Face Wash - Best for Sensitive Skin

Cetaphil Gentle Clear Acne Foaming Face Wash
Cetaphil’s Gentle Clear line brings the brand’s sensitive-skin angle to a full 2% salicylic acid formula. Label says hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, paraben-free. Describes it as gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin. That’s Cetaphil talking, not us. Around $12 for 8 ounces. Undercuts Effaclar by about $7 while listing the same active concentration.
6. PanOxyl Antimicrobial Acne Creamy Wash - Best Gentler Benzoyl Peroxide

PanOxyl Antimicrobial Acne Creamy Wash (4% Benzoyl Peroxide)
Same brand, lower dose. PanOxyl’s creamy wash lists 4% benzoyl peroxide. Brand describes pH-balanced formula with four humectants and three emollients. Label positions it as a daily antimicrobial wash for face, chest, back. If the 10% foaming version feels like too much, this is the label-approved entry point. Costs around $10. Same price as the stronger version.
7. Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Face Wash - Budget Pick

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Face Wash
That orange bottle from decades of drugstore shelves. Neutrogena’s classic wash runs on salicylic acid in an oil-free, non-comedogenic base. Around $9 for 9.1 fluid ounces. Cheapest pick here with the biggest bottle. Does contain fragrance. Fragrance-free CeraVe or Cetaphil picks suit reactive skin better.
8. Neutrogena Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Acne Face Wash - Best Scented Option

Neutrogena Oil-Free Pink Grapefruit Acne Face Wash
Classic Neutrogena wash with pink grapefruit scent added. Same salicylic acid active. Same oil-free and non-comedogenic labeling. Same 9.1-ounce bottle. If fragrance in a rinse-off cleanser doesn’t bug your skin and you want morning citrus, this works. Everyone else saves a buck with the original.
Which One Should You Buy?
Most folks should start with PanOxyl 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Foaming Wash for maximum OTC strength. Or grab CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser for ceramide-buffered 2% salicylic. Sensitive or budget-conscious? Cetaphil Gentle Clear and classic Neutrogena hit those marks at around $12 and $9.

FAQ
Benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid—which should I choose?
They’re labeled for different jobs. Benzoyl peroxide’s an antimicrobial active. Salicylic acid clears pores as a beta hydroxy acid. Most routines use one in a wash, not both. Unsure which suits your skin? A dermatologist can tell you. We just compare label claims.
What does “maximum strength” mean on these labels?
Highest OTC concentration allowed for that active. 10% for benzoyl peroxide washes (PanOxyl’s foaming wash). 2% for salicylic acid washes (CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, Cetaphil). Higher doesn’t automatically mean better. Stronger concentrations come with more dryness and irritation warnings on the labels themselves.
Do I need to patch-test a face wash?
Yes. Standard label guidance for both actives: apply to a small spot first. Stop if you get irritation, burning, or excessive dryness. Benzoyl peroxide especially can trigger sensitivity reactions in some users. Per the required label warnings.
Do acne washes make skin sun-sensitive?
Salicylic acid and other exfoliating actives can bump up sun sensitivity. That’s why daily sunscreen’s the standard companion recommendation. Morning SPF belongs in any routine with these washes.
Will benzoyl peroxide really bleach my towels?
Yes. It bleaches fabric, hair, and clothing on contact. Use white towels and pillowcases while any benzoyl peroxide product’s in your routine. Rinse thoroughly.
Safety note: These are over-the-counter drug products — read and follow each product’s drug-facts label, patch test before first use, discontinue if irritation occurs, and use daily sunscreen since exfoliating actives can increase sun sensitivity. These recommendations are not medical advice. Consult a dermatologist for persistent skin concerns.
